5 Books with Twists I Never Saw Coming

Looking for thrillers? Ana Reyes shares a few of her favorite books with twists & turns

Head Full of Ghosts by Paul Tremblay

A family with a demonically possessed teenaged daughter agrees to be filmed for a reality TV show. But is the girl actually possessed? Or is someone else responsible for the family’s tragedy? The last few pages of this book left me reeling.

More Than You’ll Ever Know by Katie Gutierrez

Who is to blame when a jealous husband shoots the other man his wife is secretly married to? I certainly didn’t guess.

The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager

Riley Sager is the king of plot twists and this might be his twistiest of all. A down-on-her-luck actress passes the time by spying on a couple living in a house across the lake. Suspicions mount when the wife goes missing. I thought I knew what was going on about halfway through this book but believe me when I say I did not.

The Life Before Her Eyes by Laura Kasischke

Some of my favorite writers are also poets and Laura Kasischke is one of them. This lushly written story of both teenaged friendship and a woman approaching mid-life starts off with a tragedy and ends with one of the most heartbreaking twists I’ve ever read.

Road to Nowhere by Christopher Pike

I read this book at twelve then again at thirty-nine in anticipation of Netflix’s The Midnight Club, which brought parts of the book to the screen. And I’m happy to say the book held up. Fun fact: its twist is essentially the same as the main twist in another book on this list. (You might say it’s my favorite type of twist.) Can you guess which one?
